Happy Hatter’s South AKA–Helen and Karen– Deering Estate–March 8, 2012

Deering Estate – here we come!    What a beautiful day we had.   Every winter, the Happy Hatter’s South pick at least one South Florida attraction to tour.  Today it was the Deering Estate at Cutler.   Located along the Biscayne Bay, the 444 acre estate is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.   Originally built in 1896, the Richmond Cottage is the last surviving structure of the historic town of Cutler.   At the end of the nineteenth century, Cutler (established at the site of the Seminole Hunting Grounds) was one of the best settlements in Dade County.   It’s beachfront location and three fishing wharves made it a hub for transporting freight and passengers south of Miami.  In 1900, Dr. Samuel Richmond and his wife, Edith, added a three story addition to the home and hoped the first hotel between Coconut Grove and Key West.   In 1916, International Harvester CEO, Charles Deering, purchased the Richmond Cottage and transformed it into his winter residence.   He constructed the Stone House in 1922 although the cottage maintained its importance as the center of food preparation and dining for the Deerings and their guests.   After Charles’s death in 1927, the family continued to winter at the estate until its sale to the State of Florida in 1985.

BOWLING BABES–1/30/12

Big thanks to Judy L., Joan T., and Marie P. for organizing the Happy Hatters 1st but definitely not the last  bowling party.
These ladies certainly love to try different activities, which I think is why we are still together.   Quite a few of the other groups are either disbanding or slowing down considerably with their activities.    There is no stopping The Happy Hatters.

“Making Woopee”
We’re having fun
We’ve come of age
Now we’re not stuck
In any cage
We’re always reddy
Because we can be
For Making Woopee

Our purple gowns
And Hats of Red
Show that we’re very
Far from dead
Oh yes, we’re giddy
And sometimes silly
While Makin’ Woopee

We’re just a bunch of ladies
Enjoying the life we live
We may be a little crazy
But we’ve a lot to give
So don’t forget
We’re far from old
We’re just hot stuff
We’re never cold
It’s really killing
How we’re so willing
FOR MAKIN’ WOOPEE
The Happy Hatters would like to wish all of our Red Hat sisters a happy healthy holiday season.  All agreed that it was wonderful for all of us to come together and we hope to continue this tradition again next year.
